Essentials oils can be used instead of antibiotics, anti-fungal medication, and as a plus they have anti-viral activity and will never create resistance like antibiotics do. Such oils are highly effective on strains like Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, E.Coli, Klesbiella, Pseudomonas, Candida, gram positive and gram negative bacteria as well as various viruses. Anti-parasites activity and insecticide activity have been reported (cedarwood oil kills bed bugs).
~ Essential oils that can cure ~
Tea Tree, Thyme, Frankincense, Myrrh, Sage, Ginger, Cedarwood, Cloves, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Peppermint, Cedarwood
Usage: It depends on the oil you want to use, however in general you need to seek the dosage that is the most effective at the least amount. Always "dilute" essential oils either in honey (agave syrup- for vegans), carrier oil for massage (almond, jojoba or even olive oil), or using alcohol (ethanol, usually alternative health practitioners use pure vodka). Now it depends if you want to take the oils internally or apply them externally. Here is an oils mix that works very well on a lot of ailments (flu, cold, sinus infection, laryngeal infection, tonsillitis, colitis, parasites, urinary infections, mouth infections including candidosis, ear infections, acne and more). Make a mix of Tea Tree oil 70% to Cloves Oil or Thyme oil 30%. For this oil mix, the usage is the following: children 3-6 years old: 1 drop oil mix in 1 tbs honey (agave)/3 times a day, older children up to 14 years old 2-3 drops/3 times a day, adults: 3-5 drops/3 times a day. This is for internal use. For external use you can just do steaming (inhalations) -great for sinus infections (3-5 drops in the boiling water): cover with a towel and inhale for 10-15 min. This is also great for acne. You can also use 5 drops in an aromatherapy candle (diffuser), or in a nebulizer. For massage use 3-4 drops in 10 ml olive oil for whole body massage, or jojoba oil (for face). For ear infections you can either use 5 drops in 10 ml olive oil, or ethanol undiluted with water (100%). You can also use cheesecloth applications were you add 2 drops of oil at 100 ml water.
Caution: always perform a skin test for allergy or intolerance. Infants and children under 3 years old as well as pregnant women should not use essential oils.
Tylenol has been several times retracted from the market by FDA for various reasons, including improper dosage tool -bottle design flaw- for infants and kids, which happened just very recently. Tylenol (also known as acetaminophen) is used to control moderate pain and decrease fever. It is an over the counter medication and it is routinely prescribed almost with each doctor's visit for infants and kids, as well as adults. When someone gets flu or a cold, has fever, gets immunized, even when normal physical events occur like teething, menstruation, tylenol (acetaminophen or motrin, or the European variant called Panadol) are always prescribed without a second thought. Even worse, parents that have no idea what these drugs are, use them on their kids maybe even going past the normal dosage to get better effects all the time as these drugs are over the counter in pharmacies everywhere. Mass-media advertising for these drugs aren't helping either as they present tylenol as a safe drug for kids with fever used by good mothers worldwide for generations.... This is very scary because acetaminophen (tylenol) is liver toxic, especially for infants who are highly sensitive and cannot clear-out toxins due to immature young and small livers. Aspirin is a no no for fever in infants and small children because it can cause Reyes syndrome. Routine administration of Tylenol should not be performed because of these reasons stated above, however in life threatening situations like febrile seizures any pediatrician recommended fever reducer should be used as from two bad option we should pick the least one. Febrile seizures can lead to sever hypoxia that can affect badly the child brain and threaten its life as the child suffocates.
So what can we do to decrease the fever and pain without using drugs? I personally try not to use anything except natural remedies for my kids, unless their fever reaches a dangerous point. I don't want my kids to be affected later in life just for taking something to keep their fever low and to keep them in school or daycare just for the sake of my job (career), their life and health is beyond anything else. When they get fever for more than 1-2 days, I just give them warm baths that will adjust the temperature naturally and help them hydrate extra through the skin. If fever gets high (over 37.8 0C) I use wet wraps made from damp towels with warm water that will not create a shock, for the baby wrap only the bottom part of the body including legs. The warm water temperature is so much lower than the body so it will simply cool it down. Water evaporates in contact to the warm body and creates a cooling effect helping fever to go down faster. Mint tea, eucalyptus oil can be added to these towels or baths to obtain an extra cooling effect. Plenty of vitamin C, Zinc, echinaceea, elderberry supplementation are good immune-stimulants for older children; for infants if you as a mom drink fresh ginger juice and take the vitamins, zinc, elderberry syrup, echinaceea, licorice tea and breastfeeding, it will pass on in the milk. These are remedies that were used for thousands of years world wide with no side effects and no allergies. Fresh slices of cold raw potatoes on feet, hands, forehead and damp towel wraps decrease fever simply by changing the body's temperature and will make the kid or baby feel more comfortable. Fever by itself it is not bad as it is the way of the body to fight infection - by raising the temperature, many viral and bacterial essential enzymes get inactivated thus the body can kill these bacteria/viruses. Thus some fever is OK, only when fever is very high (over 38 Celsius) and continuous (raises very fast -like in viral infections-) and there are other bad symptoms such as when an infection is present, and it doesn't go away with natural at home remedies, you must go to ER with the child. Also beware that babies and children up to 2-3 years can suffer from febrile seizures! In this case administration of a fever reducer like acetaminophen will save the child's life and it is good to have handy a suppository fever reducer and a valium suppository if you know your child suffers from febrile seizures. So many children are OK even with 40 degrees fever, but others have a lower excitability level of the brain. Thus the first ones are lucky to succeed with home-made natural remedies and the others need careful monitoring and immediate intervention. Do not let a baby or a small child to suffer of prolonged high fever (like overnigth) under no circumstances! This is more likely a hereditary condition, and many small kids suffer from it.
For natural teething remedies see this link, they work well, I used them with my older kid and still using them with my baby. For menstruation pain control with natural remedies, please see this link as many teenage girls are affected. Pain can have different levels but any sharp, or continuous pain requires medical attention not at home treatment with tylenol or home-made remedies! Pain is also a natural way of the body to warn us that something is really wrong and we must treat the cause not the effect.
As parents we need to be a step forward and we should not trust the system and the routine prescriptions blindly, no matter how educated and experienced are the ones who recommend them may seem to be, always look up any drugs that are prescribed to your children and use them only if and when needed. For information in regard to tylenol (aka acetaminophen) toxicity read here. I'm citing also from wikipedia for example "Acetaminophen causes three times as many cases of liver failure as all other drugs combined,[1] and is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States,[2][3] accounting for 39% of cases." Read more about the history of tylenol and dangers at the wikipedia link provided by simply clicking on the highlighted word.
Also there has been a new FDA alert and press release regarding Acetaminophen:
"Qualitest Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets 10 mg/500 mg: Recall - Potential for Oversized Tablets
[Posted 09/11/2012]
AUDIENCE: Consumer, Health Professional
ISSUE: Today, Qualitest, a subsidiary of Endo Health Solutions, issued a voluntary, nationwide retail level recall for one lot of Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets, USP 10 mg/500 mg. Bottles from the affected lot may contain tablets that have a higher dosage of acetaminophen, and as a result, it is possible that consumers could take more than the intended acetaminophen dose. Unintentional administration of tablets with increased acetaminophen content could result in liver toxicity, especially in patients on other acetaminophen containing medications, patients with liver dysfunction, or people who consume more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day.
BACKGROUND: Hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen 10 mg/500 mg tablets are indicated for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. The affected lot, C1440512A, was distributed between May 14 and Aug. 3, 2012 to wholesale distributors and retail pharmacies nationwide. The lot number can be found on the side of the manufacturer’s bottle. Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets are approximately 16.51 mm in length, pink, capsule-shaped tablets, with "3600" debossed on one side of the tablet and "V" on the other.
RECOMMENDATION: Consumers who have lot C1440512A should contact Qualitest at 1-800-444-4011. Consumers who are unsure if they have the affected lot number should consult their pharmacy or health care professional. Pharmacists and wholesalers are asked to check their inventories for lot C1440512A, segregate any material from the lot, and to contact MedTurn at 1-800-967-5952 for instructions on product return.
Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:
- Complete and submit the report Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
- Download form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a reporting form, then complete and return to the address on the pre-addressed form, or submit by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178
[09/11/2012 - Press Release - FDA]" from the FDA official alert services.
Thus my whole point is that certain over the counter drugs should not be administered routinely by healthcare providers and parents and should be used only when needed! How many times parents give tylenol their kids just not to skip school? or at the minimal sign of flu or teething? way too often! so once again beware!
Blessings, Dr.C
